Advent Calendar – Christmas Cookies

08 Dec

My mom always baked several varieties of Christmas cookies. Three of my favorites I still make with my boys. Cut out cookies, apricot filled cut out cookies, and mistake cookies. The boys love decorating the cut out cookies, but not quite as much as eating them!

Mistake Cookie Recipe

3 cups flour

1 tsp. baking powder

1 cup butter

3/4 cup sugar

2 TB milk

1 egg

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

1 pkg nut topping

container of colored shot

6 oz bag of mini chocolate chips

colored sugar

Mix butter, sugar, egg, milk and vanilla together. Then add the flour and baking powder. To that mixture add the nuts (if you want), colored shot and chocolate chips.

Roll dough into a long snake-like log on a piece of wax paper. Roll the log in colored sugar. Wrap up the wax paper and put log into refrigerator. After a few hours of chilling, take out, cut into cookie pieces and bake in oven for 5-8 minutes at 400 degrees F.

Eat and enjoy!

The Mistake Cookie recipe was Grandma Tregler’s. It happened quite by accident one day when she was making a batch for Christmas. She had all the colored sprinkles on the outside and was trying to roll it up but it was too sticky. Then she realized she had forgotten to put the flour in. So she put it back in the bowl, added the flour and mixed it all up with the sprinkles inside the cookies. Then she made the rolls of dough, rolled them in colored sugar (I use a combination of red and green together, makes them look festive) put them in the fridge to set so she could cut and bake them later. We loved the “Mistake” cookies better even better the new way! I still make them every Christmas and I’m glad our grandchildren love them as much as we did so many years ago.
